1977 Who concert released on DVD
The Who - At Kilburn 1977 + Live at the Coliseum is
the title of a newly released DVD. On December 15, 1977, The Who
performed before a select invited audience at the Gaumont State Theatre
in Kilburn, North London, to record a concert for Jeff Stein's film,
The Kids Are Alright, which turned out to be one of the last live
performances by drummer Keith Moon. Only a few clips of this concert
made it into the film. The Coliseum concert dates from 1969 and
features songs from Tommy, which didn't make it onto film till 1975.
Ken Russell directed the film of Tommy and it featured a host of performers including Elton John, Ann-Margret and Tina Turner as the Acid Queen. It was filmed in the Lake District and Portsmouth. I remember the filming and the news that the pier in Southsea had burnt down, which features in the closing seconds of the film. This brought some animosity at the time because of the way the film had disrupted the town.
